 SARA 2007 International Award Recipient:

Ricardo Legorreta

Prepared by Adriana Garcia, FARA

Ricardo Legorreta, internationally recognized Mexican architect has been selected to be our recipient of this year’s International Award.

Mr. Legorreta was born in Mexico City in 1931. He graduated in 1953 from the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) with a degree in Architecture. He established his own practice in 1960 after working for other architects and has since designed a very diverse group of buildings in his native Mexico and in the USA, Israel, Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Nicaragua, Qatar and other countries.

He has also taught in the UNAM, the universities of Harvard, Texas, UCLA, lecturing in the universities in Mexico, Argentina, Barcelona, Chile, Costa Rica, Madrid, Toronto, Uruguay, Vancouver, etc.

His buildings are characterized by the use of bright, bold colors and solid geometric shapes. Ricardo Legorreta has mastered the interaction of walls and planes, which he reinforces with intense colors and the masterly use of light, shadows and texture with the integration of autochthonous values.

He has received many awards and recognition and two Gold Medal: in 1999 from the International Union of Architects (based in France) and in 2000 from the AIA.
